LISA

LISA live(s) in Kikker

Theater Kikker and Springdance invited LISA to ‘occupy’ Theater Kikker from December 19th to 22nd. LISA seized this opportunity to present new or rarely shown work of herself. In addition, LISA invited four international guests, theatre makers whose work is well know internationally but has never been presented in Holland before: DD Dorvillier, Jennifer Lacey, Volker Gerling and Lone Twin.

Point of departure for each evening is a piece of one of the LISA’s. Another LISA reacts on this with a new, short performance, especially created for this occasion. The evening will be concluded with a performance by one of the international artists, which is connected to the starting point of the evening.

Description of the programme

ONE – Wednesday December 19th
The basis for the first evening of the festival is This is Love (2004) by Paz Rojo. This is Love is a letter to the audience in which Paz Rojo reflects on theatre and the encounter which takes place. She engages in the ways we watch and listen in the theatre. This is Love is a public action that shows the ethical moment in making the decision of being silent, or staying silent. The text will be presented in English by Paz Rojo, and will be simultaneously translated in Dutch by Hester van Hasselt.
Ivana Müller will respond to Paz Rojo’s letter in Into the Night, a video performance. In this work Ivana Müller questions issues such as absence and presence, visibility and invisibility and the empathy of a theatrical meeting.
In March 2007 Paz Rojo saw the intervention-performance Another Nostalgie: Intervention for a Spanish Girl With Intimate Letter by DD Dorvillier (US), at that time presented under another title. The version Paz Rojo saw was partly based on her letter. The current version, with a tailor made title, is a further adaptation of the themes translation, communication, intimacy and shared fantasy. Another Nostalgie: Intervention for a Spanish Girl With Intimate Letter is presented by two performers and a live musician.

TWO – Thursday December 20th
Nicole Beutler based Les Sylphides on the first non-narrative classical ballet, known under the same title (Fokine, 1907). She presents Les Sylphides as a work in progress in which the virtuosity of three classically trained dancers is combined with her artistic intervention, a combination that results in a surprising relevant version.
David Weber-Krebs views Nicole Beutler’s Les Sylphides as an attempt to recreate ancient beauty into new beauty. This idea is the basis for his filmic response to Beutler’s work.
In Two Discussions of an Anterior Event Jennifer Lacey (F) looks back at Skin Mitten, a solo she made 10 years ago. The question is: how do you deal with a changed artistic vision as regards to the past?

THREE – Friday December 21st
Theatre Miniature, by David Weber-Krebs and Alexander Schellow (D), is the starting point of the evening. It is a ten-minute performance for one spectator that can be visited in the Kleine Zaal of Theater Kikker during the four days of the festival. In Theatre Miniature the basic principles of theatre are exposed and confront the lonely spectator with his/her expectations. The performance is typical for David Weber-Krebs’s work: minimal in its means, maximal in its effects.
For those who have not had the chance to experience Theatre Miniature the evening will start with an interview with the two artists conducted by Jeroen Fabius.
In her response to David Weber-Krebs’s work Hester van Hasselt explores the boundaries of language in an attempt to cross the thin line between presence and absence. For when not evening night she works with actor Cas Enklaar.
Nicole Beutler’s contribution to the evening relates to the work by Hester van Hasselt and her role as performer in Nicole Beutler’s work. The uncertainty principle is about the unknown in that what is usually considered as known or self-evident.
The international input in this evening’s programme is from Volker Gerling (D). He will present his Daumenkinographie for the first time in the Netherlands. Images from Gerling’s Daumenkino will be projected on a big screen. At the same time Volker Gerling will tell stories about the meetings he had during his walking tour through East Europe.

FOUR – Saturday December 22nd
In her video lecture On Belief Ivana Müller focuses on the magic of theatre: the gathering of spectators and performers, sharing time with one other and attempting to get as near as possible. Müller playfully sheds light on the process of making theatre and shows that both artist and spectator are responsible for this process.
Paz Rojo understands dance as an uncertainty. It is a process of embodiment of possibilities, the difficult exercise of making it your ‘own’, a process that influences the dancer and the spectator as well. The dance only exists because of its enactment. In this way This is Fidelity connects well with On Belief.
Lone Twin (UK) is the international apotheosis of this evening: two theatre makers who travelled the world for nine years. With every meeting they had, they offered a performance. Today – nine years and seven hundred performances later – the performance 9 Years is completed. In a mix of performance and narrative Lone Twin summarizes their journey.
