Nicole Beutler (Munich, 1969) is a dancemaker, curator and performer living and working in Amsterdam since 1993. She studied Fine Arts at the Arts Academies of Münster and München, German Literature at the University of Münster and subsequently Dance and Choreography at the SNDO, Theaterschool in Amsterdam. Her work is situated on the threshold of dance, performance and visual arts, she focusses on the precise articulation of sense and experiences in form of performance projects, installations and books. Her performances are composed musically, and suffused with subtle humour. They are characterised by minimal stage sets and a focus on the performer as a human being. In all her work, she examines the function of dance in the context of performance and theatre. Her recent activities include the curating of the lecture series The Old Brand New (January-September 2009) and the performances: Lost is my quiet forever (2008), her remake of the classical ballet Les Sylphides (2007/2008), Enter Ghost (2006), The Sensation is Real (2007), the exact position of things (2005) and several species of small furry animals… (2003).
She co-founded the collective of theatermakers LISA in 2005 and since initiaties projects that enable reflection and encounters, she also works as curator for dance and performance at Theater Frascati in Amsterdam since 2008. In varying roles she collaborated for many years with choreographer and performer Paz Rojo, she worked on several projects of David Weber-Krebs, with Hooman Sharifi, with the live art group Private Thoughts in Public Places, and since 1999 she performs in The Show Must Go On by Jérôme Bel. She also works as artistic adviser for colleagues and younger choreographers, and as guest teacher at the School for New Dance Development and the Mimeschool, both departments of the Theaterschool, AHK, in Amsterdam. In 2005 her daughter Sophie was born.
