the uncertainty principle

(2007)

This performance was made in the frame of our event LISA live(s) in Kikker from 19-22 December 2007 in Theater Kikker in Utrecht. We gave each other the assignment to respond to each other’s work. I respond to the research of Hester van Hasselt, that is based on a piece of prose written by Samuel Becket: Ill seen Ill said. In it the writer makes an attempt to recreate his deceased mother with the help of text.

I decided to translate this attempt literally onto the stage, by attempting to make ‘HER’ appear here and now with chalk on a schoolboard. Writing and erasing again what had been written. So ‘She’ may be here momentarily, but gone again the next moment. I make an attempt to make ‘HER’ appear and to make her dance in our imagination- ‘HER’ being the old woman of Becket, Hester van Hasselt and any other woman at the same time.
